Invitation To Attend

Invitation from the Convenor

On behalf of the organising committee I am delighted to extend an invitation to all who have an interest in dams to participate in the 2009 Australian National Committee on Large Dams Annual Conference to be held in Adelaide, capital city of South Australia – the “Wine State”.

The Technical Conference will be held between 12 and 13 November 2009 at the Hilton Adelaide Hotel, in the heart of Adelaide and overlooking Victoria Square. Right next door to the hotel is the vibrant Central Market and it’s only a five minute walk to bustling Rundle Mall, the main shopping precinct.

The Conference theme “Dams: where to next in climates of change” is topical as we are all working in climates of change; meteorologically, economically, environmentally and organisationally. The theme provides an opportunity to raise and discuss these climates of change and their impacts on planning, design, construction, management and operation of dams. The keynote address of the first day will be given by Mike Young, Professor of Water Economics and Management at the University of Adelaide. Mike has strongly influenced the development of water policy in Australia and I am sure his presentation will be thought provoking and challenge conventional thinking on water management in the context of these “climates of change”. Equally thought provoking will be a keynote presentation on meteorological climate change delivered on the second day by Barry Brook, Professor of Climate Change at the University of Adelaide. Barry is providing advice to government, industry and the community on how to tackle climate change.

A one day workshop will be held on 11 November on the topic of “Current Practice in Seismic Dam Engineering”. Presentations by seismic experts and key stakeholders on modern dam safety expectations will provide participants with an excellent opportunity to gain updated information on seismic engineering practice.

A two day conference tour on 14 and 15 November 2009, will take participants through the picturesque Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills wine regions and will include stops at the recently completed Bruce Eastick North Para RCC Flood Control Dam, upgraded Millbrook Dam and current spillway upgrading works at Little Para Dam. There will be an overnight stay at Tanunda with dinner in the historic Chateau Tanunda. The tour will also include a visit to the recently upgraded Lock and Weir No. 1 on the River Murray at Blanchetown. South Australia’s water supply system is highly dependent on the River Murray and the visit to the weir will enable participants to gain an appreciation first hand of the present plight of the River Murray.

The Social Program includes a Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening and Conference Dinner on Thursday evening in the National Wine Centre. For partners the social program will also include an outing to the McLaren Vale wine region and visits to places of interest in and around Adelaide with free time included to allow self discovery of Adelaide.

On behalf of the conference organising committee we look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide in November 2009 for the Annual ANCOLD Conference.
