Invitation to attend
On behalf of the local organizing committee I am pleased to extend a warm invitation to everyone in the dams community to participate in the joint Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) and New Zealand Society of Large Dams (NZSOLD) 2010 Conference to be held in Hobart, the beautiful capital city of Tasmania.
The Technical Conference and workshop will be held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, 3 to 5 November. This landmark hotel overlooks Hobart’s fascinating historic waterfront, and is minutes away from the central business district and Hobart’s many tourist attractions.
The Technical Conference will begin with a Workshop to be held on November 3 and currently it is planned to cover topics such as:
- Guidelines on Assessment of the Consequences of Dam Failure
- Guidelines on Tailings Dams Design, Construction and Operation
The Conference theme “Dam Decisions: Past Experiences, Future Challenges“ is intended to challenge all involved in the dams industry to consider how asset management can be embraced as a comprehensive and structured approach to the long-term management of dam related assets to:
- Improve stewardship
- Improve communications and relationships
- Improve risk management
- Improve financial efficiency
All of us contribute in some way to the life cycle of dam related assets and as such we are constantly challenged to deliver required ‘levels of service’ for dam related assets at minimum life cycle cost.
By coming together and sharing past experiences and understanding the differing challenges that we all face the opportunity exists for us to collectively help ‘close’ the asset life cycle loop and embrace a culture of continual improvement.
A two day post conference tour will take place between 6 and 7 November and will incorporate an overnight stay. In keeping with the theme of the conference the tour will incorporate a mix of historical sites, recently constructed works and upgrades currently underway and is sure to be of interest to both delegates and partners alike.
The Social Program includes a Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening in the IXL Atrium , a part of the Henry Jones Art Hotel on the site of the IXL Jam Factory which dates back to 1895. This will be followed by the Conference Dinner on Thursday evening at the Wrest Point Casino which incorporates a short scenic river cruise. Partners will also have the opportunity to visit places of interest in and around Hobart.
On behalf of the Local Organising Committee, I look forward to welcoming you to Tasmania in November 2010.
